The Sunrise Rivalry: How Greg Cummings, Roger Austin, and Christel Aime Sparked the Thousand-Incline Challenge—and what it means for your first 1,000 climbs

Welcome to the incline universe, where every step is a punctuation mark and every ascent writes a small epic on your lungs. Here at Incline Trackers, we’ve watched a story unfold that feels almost mythic in its rhythm: two rivals, a trail, and a sunrise that kept forcing them back for more. This is the sunrise rivalry that lit the fuse for the Thousand-Incline Challenge, and it still fuels the aspirations of climbers who want not just to count climbs, but to redefine what a thousand can mean.

Picture a dusty trail bathed in pale orange light. Greg Cummings and Roger Austin, two climbers with contrasting styles, sized each other up on the Manitou steps and decided to push past ordinary numbers into something legendary. The thousand-climb milestone didn’t descend from a spreadsheet; it grew from sweat, stubborn jokes, and the quiet thrill of proving you can stack a thousand tiny victories into one unstoppable year. Christel Aime didn’t just observe—she stepped into the arena, crowned herself the third person to complete a thousand climbs in a single year, and added a poetic voice to the chorus that still echoes today.

First light, first rivalry: Greg and Roger ignite the spark

The rivalry began not with a roar, but with a morning ritual. Greg and Roger met the incline with equal parts bravado and tremor—two athletes chasing a single, luminous idea: what if ascent could be measured not by distance but by intention? They traded miles for milestones, jokes for grit, and every sunrise became an informal tally mark in a notebook that looked suspiciously like a dare. The thousand-climb challenge, while simple in its mathematics, required something more stubborn than muscle—an almost stubborn faith that repetition breeds mastery.

Our archives show the early days of their friendly competition, where every climb was a conversation and every set of stairs was a chorus. They weren’t just counting ascents; they were cataloguing character: the way a body learns to listen to itself, the way a mind finds a rhythm when the heart insists on sprinting. The rivalry wasn’t about who would win a single race; it was about who would commit to a thousand conversations with the incline and emerge with a stronger voice, a clearer purpose, and a brighter sunrise.

Christel Aime joins the chorus: the third to conquer a thousand

Into the dynamic enters Christel Aime, a climber who didn’t merely follow a script—she wrote one of her own. Her ascent to the thousand-climb milestone is a story of steady bravery, of turning daily discipline into a public declaration: consistency compounds into legend. Christel’s achievement didn’t just add a name to a ledger; it amplified the message for every beginner and every seasoned climber who wondered if a thousand climbs could ever feel like a single breath held long enough to count as a victory.

Christel’s path was a blend of calculation and charm: she tracked progress with care, invited the community to watch and learn, and proved that the incline isn’t a foe to be conquered but a partner in growth. Her footsteps—careful, deliberate, unapologetically persistent—made the Thousand-Incline Challenge less a test of endurance and more a celebration of consistency. Her presence turned a statistical milestone into a shared experience, a beacon for all who dream of turning small steps into a transformative year.

The ripple effect: what their story means for your first 1,000 climbs

That sunrise rivalry didn’t vanish with the finish lines; it evolved into a living blueprint for climbers today. Here’s what their legacy means for you, right now, as you contemplate your own thousand-step journey:

Make it personal, not punitive. A thousand climbs isn’t a sentence; it’s a long, generous invitation to learn your best rhythm.
Track with intention. Let precise ascent data guide your choices—pace, recovery, and progression become your compass, not a stick to beat yourself with.
Celebrate every milestone. Each hundred climbs is a small festival; invite your community to cheer, share, and reflect.
Balance competition with collaboration. Rivalry sparked growth, but companionship sustains it. Learn from peers, mentor newcomers, and grow together.
Document your journey. Stories are the fuel that keeps others going. Share your climbs, your obstacles, and your breakthroughs.

Practical steps to begin your own thousand-climb journey

Set a realistic cadence. Decide on a sustainable weekly target (e.g., 3–5 climbs) and build a calendar you’ll actually follow.
Record every ascent. Use a simple log—date, time, number of repetitions, heart rate if you track it, and how you felt before and after.
Borrow inspiration from the legends. Let Greg and Roger’s early competition remind you that progress is a blend of grit and playfulness; let Christel’s consistency remind you that steady work compounds.
Engage the Incline Trackers community. Share your milestones, ask for tips, and give encouragement to others climbing toward their own thousand.
Reflect monthly. Read back through your logs, celebrate the pattern you’ve built, and adjust to keep momentum without burnout.
